A Quick Look at the Numbers

Today we wrapped up the last day of FLL preparations.

On Saturday we will be travelling 26.8 miles to Churchville-Chili Middle School, where our kids will compete in a regional qualifier tournament.

I would like to look back at the season in numbers:

  • 1093.5 hours working on the robot and project.
  • 42 hours (roughly) per kid.
  • 32 meetings. (one meeting cancelled because of large fire in Albion)
  • 26 club members.
  • 6 robots (3 EV3’s, 3 NXT’s).
  • 5 different towns.
  • 4 guest speakers.
  • 3 teams (1071, 1405, 15629).
  • 3 months in a building without heat …
    Month Ave. High Ave. Low
    Sep 73°F 54°F
    Oct 61°F 43°F
    Nov 48°F 34°F

Regardless of the outcome of the competition, we are very proud of the work that the kids achieved.

Off and running

Wow! We are off and running with this years FLL Challenge “Natures’ Fury”. The last couple weeks have been crazy. We had to buy 2 new computers (Ugh Windows 8), and get them all setup.

Last year, the Orleans County 4-H Robotics Club had one FLL team (12 kids all together, the two 8-year-olds came to the meetings, but weren’t involved in the project or the robot — but we got them team shirts/hats and they came to the competition as our cheerleaders.) Trying to plan ahead, we pre-registered two FLL teams back in May (Teams 1071 & 1405)..and ordered 2 new Lego EV3 robots and 2 Field Setup kits.

As we enter week 2, we currently have at least 26-committed kids, and perhaps a few others who are trying to determine if our schedule meshes with their own busy lives. While my wife and I rush to register a third team (Team 15629), and try to see if we have the budget to buy a 3rd EV3.

We have managed to get the obstacles built (and a few of them re-built, and re-built again) And we have assembled the first 2 EV3s (and our original 2 NXT robots) into basic rolling bots, so the kids can start attempting the missions.

Next weekend, we will be formally picking teams, names and colors. Which should amp-up the project work, and perhaps start seeing some coopertition.

2013 FLL Season Kickoff

The season is upon us for FIRST Lego League!

We will meet for the first time this year on Saturday, September 7th. We will begin a 1pm with kids meeting with Erik in the Fair office building until 4pm and at 1:15 with parents meeting with Marlene in the Education Center for about a half hour. Please come prepared to complete 4-H membership paperwork (it will ask for insurance information). The fee is $5 per member.

The kids will start some research and finish building the elements of this year’s game.

Lots of information will be distributed and questions answered. New and returning parent(s)/guardian(s) please make every effort to attend this 30-45 minute session. If I have to repeat it several times, I may forget whom I told what. 🙂 I will also ask, if you have a question that can be asked at the meeting, please write it down and bring it with you.

The build season will start the following week with sessions on Monday and Wednesday 6:30 – 8:00 at the fair office. I include this information just in case it is absolutely not possible for someone to attend on the 7th.

If you would like to take an early look at what the theme and challenge are for this year, please go to the following link:
